The wind always came from the same place. It crossed the hill, went once around the yard, rested a while under the porch, and left again.

Most of that summer was made of small things like that — the hour the water was drawn, the minute the rain stopped, the spacing of drops falling from the eaves.

I never thought long about why any of it needed writing down. I only knew that what is written stays, and what stays is read again someday.

In the evening a sound came in from the sea. It was too low and too even to be called waves.

Listening to it, I added one sentence at a time. The longer they grew the slower they became, and the slower they became the longer they stayed.
